Silent community

TRANSGENDERS are one of the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in Pakistan. Begging on roads and dancing at weddings are their sources of income. Over the years, this community has been maltreated as various cases of abduction, rape and murder are heard.

The tragedy of Aisha in Peshawar and the flogging of transgenders in Sialkot highlighted the plight of this community, but unfortunately their cries are unheard of unless our media sheds light on this sensitive issue. Over the last five or so years, this issue has seen under discussion on the social media as people at large have started raising a voice about the problems relating to transgenders.

I ask our government to take action against those who persecute the community and ensure rights, security, and opportunities for transgenders to enable them to lead a better life.
