Strong winds sweep across city

KARACHI: Strong winds blew across the city on Thursday after development of a pressure gradient, Met officials told Dawn.

The highest wind velocity recorded was 40km per hour.

“The pressure gradient has been formed by the weather system that has just passed from the country’s northern side and that had brought rains across the country. The weather is expected to remain like this till Jan 21, after which winds will lose their intensity,” said city Met chief Abdul Rashid.

The windy conditions, he pointed out, had created a ‘chill factor’ but there was no major variation in temperature.

“Winds create a feeling of a drop in temperature, though actually it’s not the case,” he explained, adding that the temperature was 12 degrees Centigrade at 12 noon.

According to him, there is no immediate forecast of rain.

“The weather system for winter rains develops on the western side whereas summer rains come from the eastern side. Karachi has received good rains in the winter season after a gap of many years,” he said.
