Ajoka to stage play on Manto’s anniversary

LAHORE: Ajoka Theatre is scheduled to stage Kaun Hai Ye Gustakh on Jan 19 at Alhamra Art Centre, The Mall, in connection with the 62nd death anniversary of Saadat Hasan Manto.

Shahid Nadeem, the writer of the play, told Dawn on Monday that it was Ajoka Theatre that created a kind of consciousness on Manto. “We first held readings on Manto then we staged a few plays focused on his life such as Sahib-i-Karamat, Naya Qanoon, Toba Tek Singh and Akhri Salute.”

Nadeem added that Kaun Hai Ye Gustakh was first premiered in 2012 on the centenary birth celebrations of Manto.

Written by Nadeem and directed by Madeeha Gauhar, Kaun hai Yeh Gustakh focuses on Manto’s life, works and events after his migration to Pakistan in 1948. The play starts with his journey from India to Pakistan and his impressions of the communal riots that are reflected in his writings on Partition.
