Tea whitener unit sealed

LAHORE: A Punjab Food Authority team inspected on Saturday a known food production unit in the area of Manga Mandi (Multan Road) and seized about 40,000 litres of tea whitener for being injurious to health.

The team headed by PFA Director General Noorul Amin Mengal also sealed the unit, owned and operated by the company (Dalda Foods) for flouting hygiene standards, according to a press release issued by the authority.

“The plant was sealed after the owners failed to follow the pure food rules and the PFA instructions of incorporating fresh milk in the production and use of dairy fat at the rate of 3.5 per cent while producing the tea whitener (Cup Shup).

“The company continued using 8pc of vegetable fat and non-food grade colour in the production that was against laws,” the press release reads.

The team also imposed a fine of Rs500,000 on Acha Dairy for not performing lab tests — such as somatic cell count, Raw Milk SNF, phosphatase test, whey protein test etc. The team also observed presence of flies, lights without protective shields, products without label and date of manufacturing and expiry and rusty racks in the cold store during inspection.
