RAWALPINDI: Police investigating into an illegal kidney transplantation case have wrote to the authorities concerned to block the bank accounts of three doctors allegedly involved in the scam.

Besides, the police also activated the relevant sections of the law after the district vigilance committee recommended legal proceeding against the suspects.

The police approached the district coordination officers of Chakwal, Rawalpindi and Lahore along with the sessions judges concerned to issue orders to banks to freeze the accounts of the three doctors of the kidney hospital, allegedly involved in the illegal kidney trade and collect details about their properties.

“Yes, we have written to the concerned authorities to issue directives to banks for blocking the accounts of the doctors. Next week the police will move the court for the attachment of their properties,” Javaid Akhtar, the station house officer of Rawat, told Dawn.

Decision taken on recommendation of the district vigilance committee

He said the police had also written to the authorities concerned for the travel history of the doctors. Major airports have already been asked to stop the three doctors from leaving the country.

He said the police conducted raids in Chakwal to arrest the suspects but could not find them, adding there were rumours that they had already left the country for the Gulf states.

On the other hand, the district vigilance committee, constituted to probe the illegal kidney transplantation case and fix responsibility, has completed its report and asked the city police officer to take necessary action against the suspects.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Saleem Khattak said the committee, headed by the district coordination officer Rawalpindi, had sent its report to the CPO for further proceeding.

“Since the private hospital is located in the limits of the Morgah police, the case is being transferred to them to determine whether a fresh FIR should be registered against the doctors or not. The suspects have already been nominated in the first FIR registered with the Rawat police on October 15 after the police raided a private commercial plaza and recovered 20 men and four women detained there. Police suspected that the agents of the illegal kidney trade ring had detained the people there to remove their kidneys.

The DSP said the report contained the statements of five people, belonging to Khanewal, Mandi Bahauddin and Rawalpindi, who alleged that their kidneys were removed by the doctors at the kidney hospital.

He said the police would soon move an application with the court for the attachment of the doctors’ property.
