Shaista returns

SUKKUR, Dec 13: Shaista Almani returned to her native village of Ghotki district on Saturday, from where she will be produced before the Sindh High Court, Sukkur bench, on Dec 17, sources said.

The woman was earlier said to be staying with her relatives in Rahim Yar Khan after returning from upcountry with Balkhsher Mahar. She had left her village to marry him against the will of her parents but was later divorced by him due to the pressure mounted by the Almanis.

This correspondent learnt authoritatively that Shaista had reached her native village and was residing at the house of her uncle, Khuda Bukhsh Almani.

However, Ajmal Khan Almani, the elder of the Almani clan, and Khuda Bukhsh did not confirm the news.

Other sources said that Shaista had been residing with her uncle after her return but she was not produced before the court as her relatives feared that she could have been sent to Dar-ul-Aman.

According to sources, Shaista was persuaded by her family to state in the court that she wanted to live with her parents.

A constitutional petition has been filed in the SHC by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan which fears that Shaista may be killed by her relatives in the name of honour.
