UN chief urges restraint

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations called upon the governments of Pakistan and India to “exercise restraint” in the wake of New Delhi’s claim on Thursday that it had carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control.

In reply to questions about the escalating tensions between the two states, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesman asked both countries to “continue efforts to resolve their differences peacefully and through dialogue”.

Stephane Dujarric, the UN spokesman, said: “We’re following with great concern the increase in tensions along the Line of Control.”

The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan was aware about reports of ceasefire violations and liaising with the authorities to obtain further information, Mr Dujarric added.
