From the past pages of dawn: 1966: Fifty years ago: Soviet Minister’s arrival

KARACHI: The Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Mr N.P. Firyubin arrived in Karachi on a three-day visit to Pakistan late last night after three days’ stay in New Delhi.

Mr. Firyubin will fly to Rawalpindi this morning form where he will go to Swat for a luncheon meeting with President Ayub Khan.

Mr. Firyubin will have another meeting with President Ayub Khan later in the afternoon, and will return to Rawalpindi the next day.

Mr. Firyubin refused to say anything about the nature of his sudden visit to Pakistan.

In reply to a question by this reporter Mr. Firyubin said: “I would not tell you anything.”

Question: What brings you here?

Answer: “I am the guest of the Ambassador here.”

Question: Is there any significance in your coming to Pakistan from India?

Answer: “In New Delhi I was the guest of our Ambassador there.”

In New Delhi Mr. Firyubin had meetings with the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, and other leaders of the Indian Government. — Correspondent
