LONDON: Premier League clubs Burnley and Middlesbrough were eliminated by lower-division sides in the second round of the League Cup on Wednesday, while Leicester City and Chelsea were paired in the standout match of the third round.

Burnley had enjoyed a surprise 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, but they were brought down to earth in a 1-0 loss against unheralded Lancashire neighbours Accrington Stanley, who are in League Two (fourth tier), after a goal late in extra time by Matty Pearson.

Championship (second tier) Fulham, came from a goal down to beat Middlesbrough 2-1, with Lasse Vigen Christensen getting the west London team’s winner in extra time at Craven Cottage.

David Nugent glanced Middlesbrough into the lead with an eighth-minute header, but an own goal from Belgian midfielder Julien de Sart, deflecting in Scott Malone’s shot, gave Fulham an equaliser in the 54th minute.

Belgian winger Adnan Januzaj scored a fine goal seven minutes from time to earn Premier League Sunderland a 1-0 win over third-tier Shrewsbury Town.

Januzaj, on-loan from Manchester United, lashed a 20-metre shot into the net to register his first goal for the club and ease the pressure on new Sunderland manager David Moyes, whose team lost their first two league games of the season.

Premier League Bournemouth won 2-1 at League Two leaders Morecambe, Marc Wilson sealing victory with a 25-metre shot in the 54th minute.

Clubs who are involved in European competition join the competition in the third round, the draw for which was made on Wednesday.

Premier League champions Leicester were drawn at home to Chelsea, pitting their manager Claudio Ranieri against his former club.

Manchester United will play away to third-tier Northampton, which knocked out West Bromwich Albion on penalties on Tuesday and beat Liverpool in the 2010-11 competition.

Also, titleholders Manchester City must travel to Swansea City in an all-Premier League game, Arsenal will play Nottingham Forest away.

Liverpool go to Derby County, and Tottenham Hotspur were drawn at home to third-tier Gillingham, who beat Watford on Tuesday in the other shock of the second round.
