Husband kills wife for 'honour' in Jamshoro

BADIN: A man allegedly killed his wife, mother of nine, in the name of 'honour' in Jamshoro district on Tuesday, it has been learnt.

Ghulam Hussain Chowhan attacked his wife Zahida with spade killing her on the spot, police said.

The incident took place in the Lakki Shah Sadar Area of Jamshoro district.

The body of the murdered woman was later shifted to Sehwan Taluka Hospital for the postmortem.

However, the murderer later surrendered himself to police along with the blood stained spade, where he, according to the local police officials, confessed to the crime.

Chowhan told police that he killed his wife after suspecting her of having illicit relations with someone in the same locality.

Women rights activist and politicians have called for renewed efforts to curb the menace that has plagued the country for decades.

A committee comprising lawmakers from both the lower and upper houses of the parliament has unanimously approved two bills aimed at tackling honour killings and boosting rape convictions.

Under the new law, relatives of the victim would only be able to pardon the killer of capital punishment, but they would still face a mandatory life sentence of twelve-and-a-half years.
