Brexit: the next steps

Voters in Britain chose to leave the European Union after a grueling public referendum held in June. This is the first time a country has ever voted to leave the union, and the next step in the process is to invoke Article 50 of the European Union treaty, which gives the UK and EU two years to negotiate an exit from the union. After that, 72pc of member states in the EU must approve the agreement.
