Edhi Memorial Women Squash begins in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Abdul Sat­tar Edhi Memorial Women’s Squash Championship commenced here at the PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex on Wednesday.

Dr Mehmood of the Edhi Foundation Pakistan (Peshawar Chapter) was the chief guest on this occasion who formally inaugurated the championship in which 16 players are taking part.

Chairman Welfare Comm­ittee and nazim Nawa Khali Sajjad Khan, former world champion Qamar Zaman, Atlas Khan, Wazir Khan, chief referee Munawar Zaman, PAF Academy coaches, players and spectators were also present.

Qamar, while welcoming the guest and players, said that he has special love and respect for late Abdul Sattar Edhi because of histremendous services for humanity.

“I am greatly inspired by late Edhi Sahab’s struggle and hardwork for humanity,” said Qamar.

“I always tried to follow in his footsteps and the way he lived for just one cause — to serve humanity,” Qamar said while paying tribute to late Abdul Sattar Edhi.

He said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Squash Association is a very vibrant unit of the Pakistan Squash Federation and that is why it has won the President Trophy third time in a row.

He said naming the championship after Abdul Sattar Edhi is only to pay tribute to him and his services he had rendered during his whole life. Qamar said his name “would always be in our hearts”.

In his speech, Dr Mehmood lauded the efforts being put in by the KP Squash Association by naming the championship after Edhi.

Earlier, Dr Mehmood play­ed a shot to formally inaugurating the women’s championship.

On this occasion, one minute’s silence was also observed by all the players, guests and spectators to pay homage to late Edhi sahab.

In the opening match, top seed Komal Khan defeated Kainat 3-1 in a thrilling match, the scores were 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 and 11-6.
