Rangers’ mandate

THIS is apropos your editorial ‘Ranger’s mandate’( July 22). Even though relations between the Rangers and the Sindh government have suffered a setback after the arrest of Dr Asim, there is no denying the fact the Rangers have brought peace to Karachi providing much relief to the rest of the country. Recent events have made it clear the Sindh government will be reluctant to give the Rangers a free hand to operate in the province.

This has led to a permanent confrontation between them. Under the National Action Plan, law-enforcement agencies can operate anywhere in the country to arrest culprits and no permission is needed

As a lasting solution the federal government should restrict the Rangers’ authority to the National Action Plan and end the drama of approval of the summary by the SindH government after every three months.

Law-enforcement agencies should also exercise more care and caution to avoid any act that shows abuse of power.
