One killed as rainstorm lashes southern districts

KARAK/KOHAT: A young man was killed and several other received injuries as heavy downpour coupled with hailstorm and wind lashed different parts of Karak district.

Local sources said that heavy rain, hailstorm and wind lashed different parts of the district, resulting in collapse of roofs and boundary walls of the houses.

A young man was killed when roof of the house Mir Ali Khan collapsed in Tordhand area. The name of the deceased could not be ascertained instantly.

Sources said that several people sustained injuries in rain-related incidents in Azarkhel, Chanikhel, Andaki, Kurd and Showanki areas.

The rainstorm also uprooted electricity poles in different areas and power supply remained suspended to many localities for more than 24 hours.

The boundary walls of many houses collapsed in different parts of the district. The affected people demanded of the government to conduct a survey to assess the damage and compensate them.

In Kohat, prolonged power breakdown and dark clouds clamped complete darkness everywhere for five hours in the afternoon on Monday.

The storm uprooted dozens of trees on Rawalpindi Road resulting in suspension of power supply to City-1 and City-II areas. The trees fell down on high power tension line.

All the telephone numbers of Pesco inquiries remained busy as usual and even the emergency number ‘118’ was kept busy. The consumers faced great hardships in inquiring about restoration of power supply.

However, after sometime heavy rain lashed the whole district after which people took a sigh of relief but conditions were suffocating in the congested city. The people took to the city cold springs and spent time there to get relief in the hot weather. The power supply was restored before Iftar after five hours.
