Panel to probe Orange Line deaths

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday constituted a three-member committee to probe deaths occurred at different construction sites of Orange Line Metro Train’s track.

The committee comprising directors general of departments of archaeology, environment and Lahore Development Authority would also review measures taken for the protection of workers and citizens on the construction sites of the project.

A division bench comprising Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh and Justice Shahid Karim formed the committee during hearing of petitions against the train project.

Earlier, Advocate Azhar Siddique representing the petitioners stated that the incidents of deaths relating to Orange Line’s construction had been increasing day by day.

He said the government authorities when appeared before the court undertook to take appropriate protective measures for the workers but did not own their words later.

During the course of hearing, the bench expressed its concern after a provincial law officer revealed that Khwaja Ahmad Hassaan, expected mayor of Lahore, had been supervising all affairs of the project.

The bench adjourned further hearing till June 27 and directed the law officer to explain under what authority Mr Hassaan had been looking after the project’s affairs.
