Notices to LDA, EPA, DCO on school encroachments

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued notices to the district coordination officer (DCO), the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) on a petition against alleged encroachment by a famous private school in the residential area of Gulberg.

It also sought a reply from the school management.

A resident of the area contended, through Advocate Sheraz Zaka, that the management of the school located in Ghalib Market, Gulberg, had been blatantly violating environmental laws as well as LDA by-laws and regulations.

He argued that the school had initiated its commercial activities in the residential area without seeking approval from the LDA and the EPA while now it was converting its principal’s house into a school campus.

The counsel said the school had had also blocked road through encroachments as it accommodated children of the politicians, resulting in noise pollution for the residents.

He contended that the LDA and the EPA had failed to perform their statutory obligations and the matter was of public importance.

Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh heard the arguments and sought replies from the respondent within three weeks. The judge also issued a notice to the school management.
