PMA, UoG VC reconcile with each other

GUJRAT: The three month-long stand off between University of Gujrat vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Ziaul Qayyum and Pakistan Medical Association’s (PMA’s) Gujrat activists ended on Wednesday when both parties reconciled with each other on the intervention of Gujrat District and Sessions Judge Khursheed Anwar Rizvi.

The judge hosted both sides at the Gujrat Gymkhana where district and police bosses were also present.

Doctors had been protesting for three months at the alleged misbehavior of the VC with Nawaz Sharif Medical College lecturer Dr Saima Salman.

Ms Salamn’s application for a scholarship for a PhD, withheld by the varsity management, would now be resolved through a judicial order.

The PMA will withdraw its case lodged against UoG chief security officer Raja Umar and guards for allegedly hurling threats and misbehaving with doctors on March 7 when they were trying to enter the Hafiz Hayat campus.

Gujrat District Coordination Officer Liaqat Chattha and PMA President Dr Maqsood Zahid confirmed the reconciliation.

They told Dawn it had happened due to the efforts of the district and sessions judge.

Jalalpur Jattan police had registered a case against the UoG security officer on the report of the PMA president on Monday whereas the DCO had forwarded a reference against the VC to the provincial authorities for a probe into the lecturer issue.

Proceedings on both FIRs as well as the reference will now be stopped.
