Pepco’s former MD Basharat Cheema held

LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau has arrested a former managing director of the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) on charges of misuse of authority.

According to a NAB (Lahore) spokesman, during his stint as Pepco MD Tahir Basharat Cheema disregarded, disobeyed and deviated from the recruitment rules and made illegal appointments in the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco).

β€œAn inquiry into allegations was initiated against Mr Cheema upon a direction of the Lahore High Court,” he said.

In another case, the NAB said the LHC upheld the judgment of trial court against Amanullah Farooq and Irfan Khalil, convicted of criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of Rs9 million in Prime Bank, Paris Road branch, Sialkot.

The NAB said the accountability court in its judgment had declared the accused guilty of offences mentioned above and handed down punishment of 14 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs9 million. The verdict was challenged by the accused before the LHC.

Special Prosecutor Ahsan Rasul Chattha appeared on behalf of NAB and presented arguments.
