Commissioner’s staff member shoots himself

RAWALPINDI: A member of the commissioner house’s staff is said to have attempted suicide on Wednesday, according to the police.

According to Chaudhry Rafiq, the Civil Lines SHO, Farhan Tariq, a telephone operator at the commissioner’s house, was on duty with a police guard, Mohammad Juniad when he (Farhan) took the guard’s gun and ran away with it.

“The policeman ran after him, but before he could catch up with him, Farhan had shot himself,” the investigating officer said.

The injured man was taken to the hospital and was operated upon. His condition is said to be critical, because of which his statement could not be recorded.

According to the SHO, the policeman had said that Farhan had seemed upset but had not confided in him about what was bothering him.

Commissioner Azmat Mahmood was not available for comment despite repeated attempts.

In a separate incident in Kalar Syedan, the parents of a woman who died after ingesting a poisonous substance have alleged that their daughter was killed by her in-laws, the police said.

Rehana Munir, who was married to Mohammad Mansha for eight years and had two children with him, was moved to the Holy Family Hospital after she ingested the poison.

The police had initially said Ms Munir had committed suicide because of problems with her in-laws but launched an investigation into her death after the victim’s father, Sajid Mehmood told the police his daughter was murdered by her in-laws.

According to Station House Officer at Kalar Syedan Khizar Hayat, Sajid Mehmood had received a phone call from his daughter in the morning saying she had been forced by her father-in-law to drink milk with poison mixed in.

The police investigating officer said Ms Munir had died before the police could record her statement and that an investigation into her death had been launched. He added that those accused by the father of the victim had not been arrested so far.
