ECP proceedings against Aleem suspended

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday suspended proceedings before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against Aleem Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf on a complaint of National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.

Mr Khan contended through his counsel that Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had filed a complaint before the ECP alleging that he (Khan) submitted fake affidavits before an election tribunal in a case regarding by-election held in NA-122, Lahore. He said the ECP, without investigating the matter, started proceedings on the complaint. The counsel asked the court to set aside the proceedings of the ECP on the complaint of the speaker for being unlawful.

Justice Ayesha A. Malik stayed the proceedings and sought reply from the ECP by May 17.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had defeated Aleem Khan in by-poll held in the constituency that had fallen vacant in light of an election tribunal order.
