Founded in 2009, the car-sharing service Uber now has a global workforce of about 1.1m ‘active’ drivers (400,000 in the US alone) — or drivers who take at least four trips a month. In order to track worker performance, passengers using the Uber app are asked to rate drivers on a system of five stars after their trip is over. To remain active on Uber’s system, drivers must maintain an average rating of 4.6 stars.
