SPLA-U holds protest

HYDERABAD: College teachers staged a protest rally under the aegis of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association-Unnar group (SPLA-U) on Thursday outside the local press club for acceptance of their demands and to condemn torture against teachers in Karachi.

They announced their plan to hold a sit-in on April 25 in Karachi outside CM House again.

The rally was led by Prof Shahjehan Panhwar, Hyderabad region SPLA president. Teachers from 76 different colleges participated in the protest, according to a press release.

They demanded a probe into Karachi incident in which their counterparts were subjected to torture.

They said that 3,000 posts were lying vacant in colleges which should be filled by promotion to end a shortage of teachers.

SPLA-U leaders Shahjehan Panhwar, Anwar Saghar Kandhro, Mustafa Kaka and others said the four-tier formula should be implemented for Sindh’s college teachers on the pattern of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

They said 64 days had passed since the SPLA launched its struggle, but so far the Sindh education department had not invited the association leaders for negotiations and no notification regarding the acceptance of their demands was issued.
