Police kill two ‘militants’

KARACHI: Two suspected militants were killed in a shootout with police in Gulshan-i-Maymar area on Tuesday night. One of them had a reward of one million rupees on his head.

Officials said the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Sindh police, acting on a tip-off about the presence of some militants and criminal elements, conducted a raid in Gulshan-i-Maymar area, near Northern Bypass. The raid turned into an exchange of gunfire.

“The police cordoned off the area,” said SSP Junaid Sheikh of CTD. “The armed men in the hideout attacked personnel of our team when they were busy taking positions. The attack led to retaliation from police which triggered exchange of gunfire. After a brief encounter, both the militants were killed. They were later identified as Mujahid and Abdullah.”

The government, he said, had announced one million rupees reward for Mujahid, who was an active member of Al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent. Police had also recovered two suicide jackets, hand-grenades and assault rifles from their possession, he added.
