Sarwar flays govt over ‘octroi system revival’

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf leader Chaudhry Sarwar has termed the proposed revival of “Chungi system” as Jagga tax, saying the rulers would be extracting some Rs60bn annually from the masses.

Speaking to different delegations at his office on Monday, Mr Sarwar said the rulers were already looting the masses with taxes and the new Chungi system would be taken as an anti-people policy. He said that instead of giving relief to the masses, the rulers were heading towards squeezing them. He demanded the government refrain from introducing such taxes.

The country could not be put on the path of progress and prosperity until and unless the rulers stop looting and spending national wealth extravagantly, he added.

Meanwhile, in a statement, PTI chairman’s advisor Dr Yasmin Rashid said the PML-N rulers were out to remove poor from the society instead of poverty alleviation. She said the rulers were just giving fake hope to masses instead of food, health, education and jobs. She said the rulers had no vision but keep on boasting big, which could never be materialised.
