National security and democracy

REFERENCE Tariq Khosa’s article ‘Power of the establishment’ (Feb 22). This is an amazing article on the danger to democracy by our national security apparatchiks.

It is insightful, courageous and thought-provoking. Pakistan’s history is strewn with disasters of our security establishment. Operations Gibraltar and Searchlight, Gen Hamid Gul’s Jalalabad project, Asghar Khan case, Ojhri Camp and Kargil are only some of its tragic manifestations. Yet, to date, nobody has been held accountable. Therefore, not surprisingly, they continue to indulge in such adventures.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif promised to set up a commission to find out the truth about Kargil.

He has conveniently forgotten about the promise following his assumption of office. Specifically, on the question of Hilary Clinton e-mails, was the prime minister aware of the informal channel that army chief Gen Kayani had established with the US Secretary of State? Perhaps, the then prime minister might like to enlighten the people of Pakistan on this important question.
