Rallies held as Pakistanis express solidarity with Kashmiris

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday called for resolving the lingering issue of Kashmir in accordance with the resolutions of UN Security Council, saying the credibility of the global organisation will be at stake if it fails to implement its own decisions.

Nawaz Sharif spoke to lawmakers in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan's part of Kashmir, as the countrymen observed “Kashmir Day.” Pakistan observes the day by holding rallies and arranging seminars on the issue of Kashmir.

The Kashmir Solidarity Day is observed as a national event since 1990, when the late Qazi Hussain Ahmed, the then chairman of Jamaat-i-Islami, had given the call for observing solidarity with Kashmiris for the first time on Feb 5.

Various religious and political parties held rallies and demonstrations across the country voicing support for the struggle of Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination.

All the educational institutes and government organisations were closed as there was a country-wide public holiday.
