Younis misses out, Sangakkara signs up as PSL draft ends
LAHORE: Apart from former T20 captain Younis Khan, all other renowned Pakistan players were signed as the franchises finalised their squads for the inaugural Pakistan Super League (PSL) season on the second and final day of the players’ draft ceremony here on Tuesday.
Test great Younis led Pakistan to their sole World T20 title in 2009 and the 38-year-old batsman had expressed his desire to play in the PSL, scheduled to be held in Dubai and Sharjah from Feb 4 to 23 next year, in a similar capacity.
While Younis missed out, two important members of his World T20 winning side, off-spinner Saeed Ajmal — who has been out of national reckoning recently — and discarded hard-hitting all-rounder Abdul Razzaq made the cut.
While Ajmal, who has failed to regain his form since being cleared by the ICC for chucking, was bought by Islamabad United, Razzaq was signed by Lahore Qalandars who also picked Pakistan ODI captain Azhar Ali.
Recently-retired Sri Lankan batting legend Kumar Sangakkara was another prominent name to get picked — Quetta Gladiators pitching in for him, while his compatriot Tillakaratne Dilshan was signed up by Karachi Kings.
After the five franchises picked players from Platinum, Diamond and Gold categories on Monday, players from Silver, Emerging and Supplementary categories were on offer on Tuesday.
Each squad has a 20-man roster with 16 in the main squad and four in the supplementary class.
Apart from Azhar, Lahore Qalandars picked Zafar Gohar, Hammad Azam, Zia-ul-Haq and Zohaib Khan from the silver category while Naveed Yasin and Adnan Rasool came in as emerging players.
Their supplementary choices are Razzaq, Mukhtar Ahmed, Ehsan Adil and Imran Butt.
Ajmal is one of four supplementary choices for Islamabad United alongside Hussain Talat, Umar Siddiq and Ashar Zaidi. The capital outfit picked Babar Azam, Umar Amin, Imran Khalid, Kamran Ghulam and England’s Sam Billings from the silver category while selecting Ruman Raees and Amad Butt from the emerging category.
Dilshan joined Pakistan all-rounder Fawad Alam and discarded Pakistan opener Shahzeb Hassan in being picked in the supplementary category for Karachi Kings who also bagged Mir Hamza and Saifullah Bangash from the emerging category.
Karachi Kings’ silver category choices were Pakistan paceman Sohail Khan, Bangladesh wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim, Iftikhar Ahmed, Nauman Anwar and Usama Mir.
Sangakkara was one of three supplementary choices for Quetta Gladiators alongside Aizaz Cheema and Rameez Raja Jnr.
They also secured the services of Bilal Asif, Saad Nasim, Asad Shafiq, Mohammad Nawaz and Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi from the silver category and Akbar-ur-Rehman and Bismillah Khan from the emerging lot.
Peshawar Zalmi, meanwhile, bolstered their side by signing Aamir Yamin, Imran Khan Jnr, Shahid Yousuf, Abdul Rehman and David Malan from the silver category.
Mussadiq Ahmad and Hassan Ali came in as emerging players with Mohammad Asghar, Brad Hodge, Taj Wali and Israrullah joining from the supplementary category.
