Visual art degree show opens at NCA

LAHORE: The 15th MA ( Hons) Visual Art Degree Show opened at National College of Arts on Monday.

The show was inaugurated by Punjab IG Mushtaq Ahmed Sukehra. A large number of art fanciers, family members of artists and critics attended the event.

This two-year MA (Hons) Visual Art Programme grooms students in the practical and conceptual aspects of art making, ultimately enabling them to discover their potential and find their niche in the contemporary art world.

Works of 13 students were on display at the exhibition. Painting, charcoal drawings, sculpture , installations, video and photography were some of the mediums that had been employed by students who had commented on society, identity and gender regarding effects of consumerism and globalisation.

The students who put on display their works were Safia Sher, Bushra Javed, Bahrera Basit, Arshia Sohail, Farazeh Syed, Sajjad Nawaz, Raj Kumar, Buland Iqbal, Mir Jabran, Imran Haider, Aqsa Ilyas, Ayesha Khalid and Rabia Shahnawaz.

Safia Sher told this reporter that her sculptural work and acid paintings were experimental in nature. She experimented by treating a variety of metallic surfaces with acid.

To a question that why she chose metal as a medium, Ms Sher said she wanted to express the crude experiences she had to face in life.

Buland Iqbal’s work in portrait and figures was complex and multi-layered. Iqbal in his works elaborated on the imperfections, vulnerabilities and frailties that characterise human existence.

Ayesha Khalid’s work was based on how one could change the perception of things through materials and making non-object forms. The show will continue till Dec 28.
