Alleged drug trafficker shot dead

MARDAN: An alleged drug trafficker was killed and an Elite Force personnel was injured in an ‘encounter’ here on Saturday.

SHO Sheikh Maltoon Town police station, Ashiq Hussain, told Dawn that a suspected person opened fire on police officials, critically injuring a cop of Elite Force identified as Sub-Inspector Gohar Khan.

He said the man started firing when policemen indicated him to stop for body search during a search and strike operation.

The SHO said the policemen chased the suspected person while fleeing the scene, and gunned him down when he opened fire on the personnel.

The police officer said the suspected person was identified as Badar Muner alias Baderay who was allegedly involved in drug trafficking.

The SHO said an FIR was registered in the case and efforts began to reach his other accomplices in the illegal trade.

Meanwhile, a robber opened fire when he was given a chase by the owner of a house which he had robbed and was trying to run away, injuring the house owner and a passer-by in Dagai area, police said.

Officials at the city police station quoted Ibrahim as saying that he spotted a robber cutting locks of the doors of his house.

He said when he tried to catch hold of the robber identified as Latif, he tried to run away and also opened fire.

As a result, Ibrahim said he and a passer-by identified as Fazal-i-Akbar were injured.

The house owner said later the robber also injured himself by shooting at his arm before the personnel of police rider squad arrested him with a pistol at the Pakistan Chowk.

The city police lodged an FIR on the complaint of Ibrahim and launched further investigations into the case.
