CHAKWAL: Under the special initiative of the Punjab chief minister, seven students from different colleges of Punjab left for China on Thursday.

The students-- two from Chakwal, two from Rawalpindi and three from the South Punjab-- will spend one year there to learn the Chinese language. “On their return, the students will act as interpreters for the Chinese investors during the launch of Pakistan-China Economic Corridor,” said Professor Dr. Humayun Iqbal, the director colleges of Rawalpindi division, while talking to Dawn.

He said all the expenses of the selected seven students would be borne by the Punjab Government. “Next year more talented students would be sent to China,” he said, adding the first batch of the students would get admission in Honder College of Inner Mongolia, Normal University in Hohhot city of China.

Maryum Aslam and Mohammad Haroon are pursuing their studies in Government Postgraduate College Chakwal. They were excited on their selection for China. “I am feeling very blessed to have such a wonderful opportunity,” Maryum told Dawn. “I feel very proud to be a part of the group of students who have been selected for China tour,” said Mohammad Haroon.

“This is really a tremendous achievement of our college and an honour for the whole district,” says Professor Aslam Kahoot, the principal of the college. He said with the launching of BS programmes the academic level of the college had also improved a lot.

“It is quite pleasing that for the first time two students of our college are heading to a wider academic world,” commented Professor Shahid Azad, a faculty member of English Department who teaches Maryum and Haroon English.

The Deputy Director, Chakwal Colleges, Prof Nasir Mehmood Awan termed the students of remote areas a great.
