PU dept heads given right to defence

LAHORE: The Punjab University Syndicate on Saturday provided an opportunity of hearing to the College of Information Technology (PUCIT) principal and the former director of Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology to clarify their position regarding the charges they are facing.

The meeting was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran.

According to a varsity official, PUCIT Principal Dr Mansoor Sarwar did not turn up to discuss the case referred by Lahore High Court regarding his appointment.

An application along with medical certificate was submitted to the chairman syndicate stating that Dr Sarwar could not turn up in the meeting as he was suffering from gastroenteritis.

“Additional Registrar Dr Kamran Abid told the syndicate that the seat of professor of computer sciences was advertised in 2007 in which the mentioned terms and conditions were against the university calendar. Dr Sarwar also did not have the requisite number of publications published in journals and his application was incomplete wherein experience certificates were never attached,” he said, adding the applicant’s stance that he was professor at LUMS and UMT could not be verified/authenticated.

Besides, he said, the reports of three experts were illegally opened by then additional registrar Dr Aurangzeb Alamgir prior to the meeting of the selection board making the reports doubtful and his signatures regarding illegal opening of sealed envelopes were also available on the record.

The syndicate also accorded a chance to the former director of biochemistry and biotechnology to defend her removal.

She was removed from the post of director on the complaints of her colleagues. She said she was victimised because of her sect.

The syndicate also approved recommendations of the selection board to quash eight fake degrees issued during mid 1990s.

It approved regulations regarding Professor Emeritus and annual report of the university. The syndicate showed satisfaction over the working of committee for contract appointment of faculty members.
