Police ‘rape victim’ commits suicide

MUZAFFARGARH: A 26-year-old woman burnt herself in front of the Saddar police station and later died in hospital on Tuesday.

Police said ‘S’, who committed suicide, was the wife of Mushtaq, a resident of Chaman. She set herself ablaze after sprinkling petrol on her in front of the police station.

Police took her to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment where she gave a statement to emergency doctors that some police officials raped her many times but police did not register a case against them.

The woman said she was threatened by police every time she approached them for the registration of a case.

When the news broke, the media and police teams rushed to the DHQ Hospital from where she was referred to Multan’s Nishtar Hospital where she died.

City DSP Bakhtiar Ahmad told this correspondent that ‘S’ married her cousin, Mushtaq, a year ago but she left him after one week and took divorce.

He said she worked as a police informer and later developed relations with proclaimed offenders Shakeel Dasti, Irfan Dasti and Lakha Buk.

He said the woman came to the police station last week and gave an application against Munib and Abdul Qayyum Dasti, who were constables in the city police station, accusing them of snatching cash and gold rings from her.

He said he called both parties to his office and resolved the issue.

On Sept 11, the DSP said, the woman alleged that Rohallanwali SHO Noor Husain, constable Qayyum Dasti and Muna Dasti raped her at Muneeb Dasti’s home and snatched earrings from her.

He said she took petrol from a kiosk in Tibba Kareemabad and bathed in it before coming to the police station.

SHO Munir Chandia immediately had her shifted to the DHQ Hospital when she burnt herself.

DPO Awais Ahmad told reporters that SHO Noor Husain had been sent behind bars after suspension and Qayyum Dasti and Muna Dasti also arrested. He said a case had been registered against them under murder and terror charges on the complaint of her father. He said Munir Chandia also was suspended from service.

The mother of the deceased alleged that some policemen had been threatening her to stop being informer.
