‘Proposers and seconders can be from other wards’

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has ruled that a candidate for local government election can pick his proposers and seconders from other “wards”.

Justice Ibadur Rehman Lodhi issued the ruling, allowing eight identical petitions filed by the candidates for the upcoming local body polls, challenging rejection of their nomination papers.

The ruling says Section 27 of the Punjab Local Government Act, 2013, which provides qualifications and disqualifications for the candidates and elected members, does not contain any such embargo.

The judge allowed all the petitions and set aside the orders of the respective returning officers wherein nomination papers of the petitioners were rejected on the ground that their proposers and seconders were not from the same “wards”.

Child abuse case: Ganda Singhwala police on Tuesday handed over to the Punjab prosecution department the challan of Kasur child abuse case for its submission to the trial court.

The police have arrested 15 suspects on abduction, sexual assault, terrorism and other charges.

The suspects include Aleem Asif, Haseem Amir, Waseem Abid, Naseem Shahzad, Attiqur Rehman, Tanzeelur Rehman, Saleem Akhter Sherazi, Muhammad Yahya, Ali Majeed, Faizan Majeed, Usman Khalid, Waseem Sindhi, Irfan Fareedi, Abdul Mannan and Basharat.

The prosecution is likely to submit the challan to an anti-terrorism court on Oct 19.
