‘Depts do not cooperate with ombudsman office’

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: The director of directorate of ombudsman, Sadruddin Ujjan, has complained that the government departments do not extend any cooperation in solving people’s problems.

Mr Ujjan told journalists at his office on Monday that in spite of being of any help, the departments against whom complaints were filed further created problems and added to complainants’ woes.

Citing a case as an example, he said that one Fahmeeda Samoo complained to the office that she had passed 18-month-long community midwifery diploma course in 2010-11 but had not been issued a certificate and a marks sheet since despite making several requests and meeting the officers concerned.

He said that he contacted the principal and focal person of Nausharo Feroze Community Midwifery Schoolwho confirmed the complainant had appeared in the examination.

He then talked to superintendent of examination of the centre who also confirmed the complainant had appeared for viva voce and passed. Finally, the controller of nurses examination board, Karachi, managed to find the documents, he said.

He cited another case, which was about a widow Naimat Khatoon.

Her spouse Nabi Bux Tunio, a senior clerk in the works and services department, died during service in 2003 but she was denied pension benefits and even remaining six-month salary of her late husband, he said.

She filed a complaint on May 21, 2008, and it took seven years after which, she was paid all dues and pension benefits.
