Multiple jobholding now less common in the US

The proportion of multiple jobholders among all employed US workers has declined steadily since a high of 6.8pc in 1995 and was at 5pc by the end of 2013, according to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics. The reasons are unclear: the trend, which holds regardless of occupation or industry, can’t be attributed to factors such as occupational shifts. Certain occupations seem well-suited to second jobs, perhaps because of convenient work schedules. Some 13pc of elementary-, middle- and secondary-school teachers hold multiple jobs.
