The forgotten hero

I HAVE read with profound interest the writings of Amir Aqil and Omar Anwar vis-à-vis Commodore S.M. Anwar. Allow me to contribute my bit.

I was the first-ever army officer picked for deputation with the fledgling Pakistan Marine Academy in its ad hoc location, New Haji Camp, Karachi.

I worked with the commodore as director of studies and administration in the formative years.

Commodore Anwar was a sailor of many sterling qualities of head and heart, a fine and trusting gentleman who credited hard work. He was a dedicated, devoted and constructive personality.

I had the privilege of benefiting from the account of the Dwarka exploits and witnessing his untiring efforts towards the marine academy.

I am an octogenarian now but I relish the fine memories of half a century back. Commodore Anwar, you are alive in our memories.

Major (r) Tariq Awan
Abbottabad
