Suspect’s death triggers protest by relatives

TOBA TEK SINGH: Scores of relatives of a murder suspect on Thursday blocked traffic at Pirmahal’s Ghausia Chowk -- an intersection leading towards Faisalabad, Multan, Kamalia and Shorkot Cantonment -- for hours to protest his death in custody.

The protesters set ablaze tyres and others goods and created hurdles in vehicular movement and staged a sit-in on Pirmahal-Multan Road for seven hours. Some of them pelted police with stones.

They told reporters the Pirmahal police arrested Mohsin Nazir and his brother Nadim Nazir, residents of Chak 333-GB, to probe them in the murder of Ghulam Rasool (Chak 665/6-GB).

Police, they alleged, tortured Mohsin and took him to private health facilities when his condition deteriorated. Finally, they got him admitted to the THQ hospital a few days ago where doctors referred him to Faisalabad’s Allied Hospital but he died on Thursday.

The policemen tried to hand over the body to his family but they refused to receive it and staged a protest demonstration.

ASP Usman Butt held talks with the protesters and assured them that a murder case would be registered against the policemen found involved in torture of the suspect.

It is learnt that Mohsin helped a woman kill her husband Ghulam Rasool about a year ago and they dumped his body in a sewerage well. Police dug up the earth but could not find the remains of the body.

On the complaint of Sarwari Mai, the mother of deceased Mohsin, police registered a case against post in-charge sub-inspector Khalid Tayyab, ASI Muhammad Nawaz, constables Muhammad Imran and Irfan Ali and six other people.
