Karachi operation and root cause

KARACHI operation is in progress under the civilian and military leadership. Indeed, the ongoing operation has reduced the serious crimes in the city like targeted killings, sectarian violence, incidents of terrorism and extortion significantly. It seems that peace is being restored to Karachi.

But, unfortunately, there is no attention to the roots which have fostered formidable gangs, including target killers, land mafias, terrorist outfits, extortionists and political militant wings in the past.

One of the major reasons that has made the law and order situation in Karachi so bad is the incompetence of the police and the judiciary. Durable peace cannot be established through force alone. Such operations were also carried out in 1992 and 1995, but they could not produce the prolonged effects.

There is no doubt about the military’s unflinching resolve to restore peace to Karachi. But the Rangers-led operation in Karachi cannot continue for an indefinite period.

It is, therefore, the shared responsibility of the provincial and federal governments to revamp and overhaul all the institutions so that law and order does not deteriorate in future.
