Police free two men picked up in seminary raid

RAWALPINDI: Two of the suspects, who were taken into custody during a raid on the Madressah Haqqania in Islamabad on Thursday night were released on Sunday.

Sources in the police department said that the two men, who were identified as Qari Imdadullah and Qari Arshad, were released after police failed to obtain any relevant information from them. A third suspect, Mohammad Shaukat, is still under investigation.

Shaukat, a Rawalpindi resident, was staying at the seminary on Thursday night, and was picked up during the raid.

Police sources had claimed that the raid was executed in connection with the investigation into the attack on Punjab home minister, Col Shuja Khanzada.

However, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, in a press conference on Sunday, denied that the raid had anything to do with the attack on the minister.

The raid was led by a senior police officer from Rawalpindi, while units from the Banni and Sadiqabad police stations, as well as Elite Force personnel took part in the raid, which was carried out without the knowledge of the Islamabad police.
