Asjad, Shahid shock last year’s silver medallists Asif, Sajjad

KARACHI: Unseeded Pakistan 3 pair of Asjad Iqbal and Shahid Aftab shocked last year’s silver medallist duo of Pakistan I Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Sajjad to earn a place in quarter-final of the world men’s team snooker championship at Movenpick hotel on Thursday.

Asjad and Shahid were home 70-69, 61-47, 0-87, 77-0, 80-0 in the last 16 match to create first major upset in the event.

They are slated to meet India I pair in the quarter-final on Friday at 10am. After the former gave 4-2 drubbing to Hong Kong 2 in the other match the scores being (97-0, 61-31, 76-30, 14-109, 4-100, 121-1).

Two more home teams – Pakistan 2 comprising Babar Masih and Shahram Changezi and Pakistan 9 (Mohammad Faheem and Abdul Raheem) were also through to the last eight.

Pakistan 2 will face Hong Kong 3 while Pakistan 9 takes on Hong Kong I in the quarters.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has ensured yet another medal after the duo of veteran Mohammad Yousuf and Naveen Perwani made it to the semi-finals of master’s team event.

India, Afghanistan and England I have completed the quartet.

Earlier, six teams from the host country were through to the last 16 round in the men’s team event.
