Pakistan, India, Hong Kong and Iran triumph

KARACHI: The top four quartet — defending champions Hong Kong I, Iran I, last year’s runners-up Pakistan I and India I — won back-to-back group matches as the third Jubilee Insurance world men’s and master’s team events commenced at hotel Movenpick on Wednesday.

Drawn in group A, top seed Hong Kong I sent Afghanistan and Qatar 2 packing by the identical scoreline of 4-1. The winning team comprised Chun Wai Lee-Kwok Wai Fung.

Second seed Iran I that includes Soheil Vahedi and Amir Sarkhosh blanked Bahrain 5-0 and India 5 (4-1) in group B matches.

The Pakistani duo of former team event champions — Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Sajjad — overcame Malaysia 3-2 and Iran 2 by 4-1 in group C.

Pankaj, who stole the limelight by retaining the World 6-Reds crown the other day, paired with Varun Madan to steer India I to thumping 4-1 victory over Qatar 3 and Pakistan 8 (3-2) in group D.

On the master’s front, Pakistan’s formidable pair of Mohammad Yousuf and ex-international Naveen Perwani opened their campaign on a winning note by beating England 2 by 3-2 and UAE by an identical margin to strengthen their position in group A.
