Committee to discuss poll inquiry commission report today

ISLAMABAD: The sub-committee of the Parlia­men­tary Committee on Electoral Reforms will discuss the report of the poll inquiry commission on Tuesday.

According to the meeting’s agenda, the secretary of Election Commission of Pakistan will brief the committee on the measures taken / proposed to be taken by the ECP with reference to its shortcomings during the electoral process mentioned by the inquiry commission.

The sub-committee, headed by former law minister Zahid Hamid, will be given a presentation by the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority on the introduction of the biometric voter identification system (BVIS) and electronic voting machines (EVMs).

It has already received a presentation on the BVIS and EVMs from the ECP officials, but found it to be unsatisfactory.

The poll inquiry commission in its report which was made public on July 23 declared that the 2013 polls were largely “conducted and organised fairly and in accordance with the law” despite “shortcomings” and “lapses” by the ECP.
