Slaughtered calves seized

LAHORE: A team of the City District Government of Lahore’s (CDGL) livestock department seized 13 calves slaughtered illegally and another two alive after it raided a house in Chah Meeran, Shalimar Town, on Monday morning.

According to CDGL’s Deputy District Officer (Livestock) Dr Rahat, some butchers had bought calves aged between two and three days from various cattle markets and were slaughtering them when the team raided.

“Butchers had slaughtered 13 calves with two more remaining when we raided there along with police. We seized all the live and slaughtered calves and had five butchers arrested besides getting a case registered against them,” he said.

During preliminary investigation, it was proved the calf meat was to be sold to restaurants, eateries and meat outlets in the city. Some cattle sellers would sell off calves to save milk of their mothers, he said.

“This not only deprives a suckling calf of milk, but also provides an opportunity to those who purchase them and sell their meat as mutton,” he added.
