Over the course of a 12-hour hospital shift, caregivers’ rate of compliance in washing their hands drops by 8.7pc, according to a study led by Hengchen Dai of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of more than 35 hospitals. The more intense the work, the greater the drop in compliance. The findings show that workplace fatigue plays an important role in compliance with professional guidelines and that the impact of work demands may accumulate quickly.
