Authorities take preparatory measures ahead of monsoon

ISLAMABAD: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has completed its disaster management preparations for the ongoing monsoon season, member NDMA, Ahmad Kamal said on Monday.

A meeting was also held in this regards recently, attended by all stakeholders. Meanwhile, collaboration with Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has been completed in this regard in order to avoid any untoward incident.

PMD has arranged a meeting with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts for their predictions of South Asian region.

Kamal added that the European Centre would share its information with PMD and NDMA, assisting the latter two to formulate its policy for the current monsoon season.

Rain expected in Karachi

Commissioner Karachi, Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, has issued an alert in the wake of expected rains in the metropolis.

Presiding over a meeting on Monday, he asked Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other relevant bodies to take necessary preventives steps to avoid any loss of life and property that may occur as a result of the rains.

The Met Office has forecast rains in Karachi during the second week of July.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the concerned departments and civic agencies. A decision was also taken to clean storm water drains on an emergency basis.

PMD also informed the meeting that rains are expected in the metropolis starting second week of July. However the intensity of rains is unknown as of now.

The meeting also asked K-Electric to take precautionary measures to ensure safety from fallen wires and to run a public information campaign in this regard.

The meeting also decided to place hospitals on alert during the monsoon rains and take necessary measures for protection against dengue.
