Four killed as vehicle falls into ditch in Jamrud

LANDI KOTAL: Four persons were killed and one was injured critically when a trailer skidded off the road and fell into a deep ditch in Jamrud on Tuesday.

Khasadar officials said that the incident took place on the main Peshawar-Torkham Road in Ali Masjid area. They said that three persons were killed on the spot while two others were injured fatally in the accident. One of the injured later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The dead were identified as Umeed Khan, Ali Raza, Aswad Hussain and Mujadid Khan, all residents of Walikhel area in Landi Kotal tehsil of Khyber Agency. The injured Gul Rehman was shifted to Hayatabad Medical Center in Peshawar. 

Officials said that the accident took place owing to over-speeding. They said that road accidents registered a rapid increase in the last month after the completion of Jamrud-Landi Kotal section of the main road. 

The Tuesday’s accident was the sixth of its type on the Jamrud-Landi Kotal section of the road, which have so far claimed eight lives and left scores of people injured.

ISLAMIC BANKING: The first ever interest-free Islamic banking system was inaugurated at the Jamrud branch of National Bank in Khyber Agency on Monday. 

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, NBP manager Anwar Ali said that Islamic banking system in Jamrud would provide interest-free bank transaction facility to the people of the tribal areas. 

He said that it was a longstanding demand of the local people and NBP also opened a separate desk for the pensioners of Khyber Agency to facilitate them in quick withdrawal of their pension amount.

Meanwhile, the relatives of a khasadar in Jamrud have expressed their displeasure over denying him promotion and cash prize after he foiled an attempt of smuggling of contraband.

Talking to journalists, Riaz Khan and Bhutto Khan said that their brother Hawaldar Misri Khan along with his assistants seized 292 kilograms of heroin and 137 kilograms of hashish from a truck at Takhta Bag checkpost and also arrested two drug smugglers.
