MANSEHRA: An anti-terrorism court of Abbottabad on Monday sent on judicial remand the three students, all brothers, for hurdling hand grenades on others and firing gunshots in the air at Hazara University.

In a related development, the university’s vice chancellor tendered resignation from his post over the incident.

Eight people, including six students, were injured after two student groups clashed at Hazara University on Thursday.

The police later arrested three students, Nauman, Assad and Sohail of Malakand, who are brothers, over violence.

Shinkiari police inspector (investigation) Amjad Khan, who presented suspects before the court, sought 10 days physical remand. However, judge Raja Masood Khan sent them on judicial remand.

The police led by Mansehra assistant commissioner Naveed Ahmad had seized guns and other material during the search operation.

Amjad Khan told reporters that all three brothers were arrested under Section 3/1 of Explosives Act and sections 149, 148 and 324 of CRPC.

VC QUITS: Hazara University Vice Chancellor Dr Sohail Shahzad tendered his resignation from the post over violence. The development came after a preliminarily report of the Thursday incident was presented to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor, who was also the university’s vice chancellor.

Meanwhile, local PML-N MPA Salah Mohammad Khan expressed annoyance at the incident and said those found responsible for violence on campus would be dealt with strictly. “We won’t allow anyone to perturb peaceful environment of Hazara University as it was and should remain a great seat of learning,” he said. The university’s six-member committee headed by faculty heads is probing the incident.

It will soon present its report to the governor to prevent such incidents.

PRICES REVISED: The price and review committee also having representation of traders and civil society have increased prices of almost all kitchen items just before the start of Ramazan.

“We have increased prices of essential items in accordance with the formula set for fixing them but we won’t allow anybody to even charge a single penny extra. The profiteers will be dealt with strictly,” Mansehra assistant commissioner Naveed Ahmad told a meeting here on Monday.

Noted among those in attendance were president of the District Consumer Protection Council Shahjehan Khan Swati, president of traders association Hafiz Ijaz Ahmad and district food controller Iqbal Shah.

The committee headed by deputy commissioner Aamer Khattak increased the prices of pulses, rice and other commodities 10 to 15 percent. The price of pakora, a basic Iftar item, has gone up to Rs130 per kg from Rs120 per kg. The mutton and beef prices will remain unchanged at Rs450 and Rs250 per kg respectively.

The assistant commissioner said no one would be allowed to makes excessive profit during Ramazan. He said profiteers would be fined and sent to jail.
