Senate may take up Rangers statement today

ISLAMABAD: The Senate is likely to take up on Monday the statement by Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, that about Rs230 billion is generated annually in Karachi through activities such as extortion, smuggling and land grabbing and that part of the amount is used to finance terrorism and other criminal activities.

The issue has been placed right at the top of the agenda for the day’s proceedings in the upper house of parliament.

The Orders for the Day show that the Senators may take up the matter even before they resume their debate on the federal budget for 2015-16.

Senator Farhatullah Babar of the Peoples Party has moved a privilege motion in this regard which says the house should immediately take up the issue of “grave and urgent public importance”.

“In fact, when the statement came on Friday (in the newspapers), I moved an adjournment motion the same day because I believed that the issue was important and it should be discussed in the parliament,” Senator Farhatullah Babarsaid while talking to Dawn on Sunday.

As per the rules of the house, it is the prerogative of the Senate chairman to allow or disallow the adjournment motion after hearing the preliminary arguments put forth by the mover and the government.
