Unchlorinated water being supplied to SC, PA & CM House

KARACHI: The provincial assembly, Chief Minister House and the Karachi registry of the Supreme Court of Pakistan are among the several prominent places where unchlorinated water is being supplied — a condition that exposes people to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, it emerged on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the focal group, which collects water samples and tests them for chlorination after the ‘brain-eating’ amoeba scare gripped the city with six deaths within a month, said water samples were taken from various government buildings as well as swimming pools in a couple of hotels in Karachi.

Besides the assembly building, CM House and the SC Karachi registry, other buildings where no trace of water cholorination was found included Sindh Secretariat, income tax building, Tughlaq House, ombudsman’s office, and the Arts Council.

“We found no chlorine at all in the water being supplied to all the key government buildings. As a matter of fact, the samples we collected from there showed no trace of chlorination,” said an official related to the focal group.
