Policemen to serve as ‘mediators’ in minor cases

BAHAWALPUR: Police victim response officers (PVROs) have been designated in the police stations in Bahawalpur Range.

Officials of ASI rank have been assigned the duty of PVROs in addition to their normal duties within their respective areas to provide immediate relief and justice to the complainants approaching the police stations, Regional Police Officer Ehsan Sadiq said here on Friday.

Later, the RPO told Dawn that in a bid to minimise crime in society, the idea had been materialised to resolve the minor and non-cognizable offences and cases like disputes among neighbours for various reasons within shortest possible time.

He said the PVROs would be allowed to rush to the scene of occurrence if they felt the need and summon the accused party in the police stations to play the role of a mediator before the registration of an FIR on the complaint of the aggrieved party.

The RPO said the cooperation of the community would be needed and it would not only relieve the complainants of extra tension but also change the “thana culture”. The PVRO concerned would not refuse registration of a case but an attempt would be made for reconciliation between the parties concerned in the larger interest of justice. And if there would be no way out, police would go for appropriate legal action, he said.

He said all the police stations had been computerised in Bahawalpur Range and now the process of the appointment of trained staff was in progress to speed up the dispensation of justice to the people and update the criminal records.

CANTT POLLS: The PML-N bagged both reserved seats (for woman and minority) in the Cantonment Board.

Ms Farhana Malik and Sameran Miachel were declared elected unofficially.
